Major protest in Berlin against "Rent price madness"
A major protest event against high rent prices took place in Berlin this weekend. The protest was organized by an association of about 250 initiatives and organizations, among them institutions of Verdi (German public services union), the German non-denominational welfare association, and the Protestant Church. About 4,000 participants were expected; Berlin police estimate the actual number at about 14,000, and the organizers even spoke of as many as 25,000 protesters. Under the motto "Stop the rent price madness", participants demanded, among other measures, that the "rent freeze and legal foundation for preparing a qualified rent index be improved, that landlord-friendly exceptions in legal regulations be stricken at the federal level, and that the land transfer tax on real estate sales be extended to apply to share deals."
