Frankfurt’s Mayor wants a rent limit
Rents in all Frankfurt apartments should be allowed to increase by no more than 1 % per year, Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) suggested in an interview with the “Frankfurter Rundschau”. A comparable so-called rent limit has already been imposed on city and state-owned housing companies ABG and Nassauische Heimstätte. “We want the measure to extend to the private apartment rental segment,” says Feldmann. The heated debate already underway in Berlin and Munich about a limitation or freeze of existing rents has thus reached the Main River region as well. Implementation of such a rule would be up to the Hesse state government. Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Green Party), however, rejected the suggestion from Frankfurt in short order: The move would certainly not benefit renters, quite the contrary in fact. “I would bet money that this publicly expressed suggestion will lead directly to rent increases in Frankfurt, because landlords want to get ahead of such a limitation,” Al-Wazir states.
