Freiburg: Residents approve new large quarter

Freiburg is getting a new residential quarter with up to 6,500 apartments. In a referendum, about 60 % of voters decided in favor of the development of the Dietenbach quarter, which means 110 ha of what is currently farmland will be approved for housing construction. The new district will offer living space for up to 15,000 residents, a substantial size for the South Baden university town with just under 230,000 residents. The city administration and most of the parties in the community council had supported the development. They decided, among other things, that the proportion of subsidized housing will be 50 %. Opponents of the project argued that the city does not need to approve a new quarter to relieve its housing shortage. Instead, available lots could be developed or densified, or existing buildings could be expanded with additional stories.
