Hamburg planning a science district

Hamburg’s senate, the district of Altona, the Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron (Desy), and Hamburg University revealed their development plan for “Science City Bahrenfeld” yesterday. The name describes a vision of creating new scientific institutions, buildings for startups, and 2,500 apartments on 125 ha around the research campus in Bahrenfeld. Apart from an expansion of the Desy, which is planning a technology and startup center for life sciences, biotech, nanotechnology, and new materials in the Atona Innovationspark on Vorhornweg, the university plans to establish natural sciences facilities for more than 5,000 students. The apartments will be built on the grounds of the former horse track. The Altonaer Volkspark will be the “green heart” connecting science and research with housing and quality of life, sports, and health areas. The first architectural competitions for the new science district are scheduled for 2020.
